Getting a General Contractor’s license in North Carolina takes real work, it’s not something you just fill out a form for. Our team had to pass the NASCLA Accredited Commercial General Building exam, pass the state’s Business and Law exam, and prove we met North Carolina’s financial responsibility requirements before the Licensing Board (NCLBGC) would even issue us a license.

And the accountability doesn’t stop once you’re licensed. As long as we hold that license, we answer to the Board, so if a homeowner ever has a problem, there’s an actual authority they can turn to.

Are All General Contractors in North Carolina Licensed?

No. Most homeowners assume the state has already vetted any company advertising remodeling work. In reality, nothing stops an unlicensed company in North Carolina from running ads, knocking on your door, and handing you a quote for your exterior project.

General contracting is a regulated profession, but that only helps you if you actually verify the license yourself. A nice website doesn’t prove anything. Neither does a wrapped truck or a bid that comes in lower than everyone else’s. The only thing that tells you whether a company is legit is the state’s own license lookup.

What Happens If You Hire an Unlicensed Contractor in North Carolina?

Hiring an unlicensed contractor might not seem like a big deal, plenty of them seem friendly, professional, and affordable. But if something goes wrong, here’s what you’d be facing:

You wouldn’t be covered by the Homeowners Recovery Fund. North Carolina created this fund to help homeowners recover money lost to a licensed contractor’s dishonest or poor-quality work. It’s a great safety net, but it only applies when the contractor is licensed.
You’d have nowhere to turn. Licensed contractors answer to the state licensing board, so if a project goes badly, you have a formal complaint process on your side. With an unlicensed contractor, there’s no board involved and often no established company to follow up with, either.
An injury on your property could become your problem. Many unlicensed operations skip liability insurance and workers’ comp to keep their prices down. If a worker gets hurt at your home and there’s no coverage, you could end up caught in the middle.
Permits can get messy. Most areas require a licensed general contractor to pull building permits. Unpermitted work can stall your project, and it often resurfaces years later when it’s time to sell your home.
The savings may not last. A low bid feels great at signing. But when it’s low because the company skipped licensing, insurance, and bonding, those “savings” can turn into repairs, disputes, or an unfinished project down the road.

When Is a General Contractor License Required in North Carolina?

In North Carolina, any general contracting project worth $40,000 or more, whether that’s a repair, a remodel, or new construction, legally has to be done by a licensed general contractor.

Here’s the part that surprises people: that $40,000 is the total project value, labor and materials combined. It’s not per item. So a full exterior remodel that includes siding, a new roof, and windows can hit that number faster than you’d think, even on an average-sized home. If your project is anywhere close to that range, a licensed GC isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a legal requirement.

How to Check Any Contractor's License Yourself

This takes less than a minute, and you should do it for any contractor before you sign anything, not just us:

Go to the NCLBGC’s official license search at nclbgc.org/license-search.
Search by the company’s name or the license number they’ve given you.
Confirm the license is active (not expired or revoked) and that its classification and limits fit the size of your project.

If a company can’t give you a license number, or their record doesn’t turn up, that’s worth asking about before you go any further.

The put the life back into my old home.  They replaced my siding, performed repairs to damages, replaced sheathing, installed insulation, installed new windows (including repositions and adding new windows) and replacing my door with a larger door and staining.  I get endless compliments on how great it looks. I included some before and after photos.  White is before and green is after. Starting with Lin and working through the design process, she listened and understood what I needed and made recommendations and provided options for me to compare and use to appropriately budget.  Providing estimate of different design decisions and ways I can get what I was looking for.   that fit in my budget and gave me the look I was looking for.  We came up with a combination of board and batten with shingled gables.  She even gave me estimates on potential additions that could be needed like needing to replace sheathing on exterior so that I would not be blindsided if it came up JW was the project manager and he was always responsive, attentive and courteous.  Working with JW was a breath of fresh air after I had another contractor whose project manager was barely there and took days or something never responded to my messages or calls.  I was given expectations on start time and timeline and he did everything he could to keep the project on schedule.  With an old home like mine, issues do come up.  When they did, he made sure I was immediately informed and provided transparent pricing.  He was flexible and adjusted to accommodate changes and add ons I needed or wanted to make  on the project.  He was on-site a few times a week to make sure the crew was executing as expected.  He truly made you feel at ease. The entire crew was great.  They were knowledgeable and if they came across something they brought it to my attention and explained what they thought needed to be done and followed up with JW.  They were on time, worked hard and were always professional on site.  They would check with me if I was there to make sure it was what I wanted and adjusted if it wasn't.  I am happy with how my home has been transformed. Hatch homes also provided daily reports for what was done and pictures so you can see the progress whether or not I was there. I would recommend Hatch Homes for your exterior project needs.  From the design process to the finish of project, everyone I interacted with was professional, transparent and left me at ease with confidence that the they cared for my home and would do a good job.

They do great work which is why I contracted them a second time. As the owner, I felt informed and appreciated. They have a program to view options on your home in advance which is nice so you can get a pretty good idea of what colors and styles of siding would look like. My husband and I have built our dream home ourselves, from the floor plans and elevations, to the framing and the rough-ins and everything. However, we knew that siding was going to be too much for us to take on given the height of the house and the number of specialized tools you need. We called Hatch early in the process and they worked with us to quote us on different siding materials so we could make an informed decision. We ended up with Ascend by  Allside in Laguna blue and PVC trim and molding around the windows and doors, corners and skirt board on the bottom. We could not be happier with the result! We can't wait to complete the rest of this project with Hatch Homes. We are having them replace our old siding with James Hardie, a new metal roof, along with new gutters.
