Picture Windows

Picture windows are often located in living room areas.  They are usually pretty big, and they are made up of a single glass pane, meaning that they do not have any splits or breaks in the window.  They are typically fixed, and unable to be opened. These windows are often used when you want to have a good view of the outdoors. They are also great when it comes to letting in a lot of natural sunlight.  This gives you a better connection of the indoors and outdoors.

If you have a home that has a great view, then you will want to make the most of it.  One of the best ways to do this is to have picture windows installed in your home. These windows are just really large, and let you have the clearest, largest view possible.  This is why they are really so popular, especially out in the country or in cities where there is nice scenery.

The Average Cost of Picture Frame Windows

Picture frame windows are usually pretty average priced.  They cost between $340 and $800 per window, depending on the size and the location.  A professional window installation contractor will be able to give you a better idea as to the final cost of your windows.  It will also vary depending on whether or not you need to have a completely new window installed. If you are replacing old windows with picture windows, then it may actually be a little less expensive because they won’t have to cut new holes into the wall for the windows.

The Different Picture Window Sizes

There are a few different sizes for you to choose from with the width and height of your window.  They range from 24” to 96” in width, and 12” to 96” in height. This means that you can ultimately have a window that is 96” x 96”. This would, however, be a really huge window and cost you a pretty big chunk.

How to Know Which Picture Window Size is Right For Your Home

Determining the size of your picture windows can actually be pretty daunting, especially if you don’t know what you are looking for.  The size of your window really has a lot to do with the look that you are trying to achieve. Not all rooms are designed to have the same size windows.  Windows are not made from cookie cutters.

Are you trying to open up the room some, and make it look bigger than it actually is?  If so, then you need to go with a larger picture window. Are you looking to use smaller windows, and space them throughout the room?  If so, then you can go with several different picture windows spaced strategically throughout the room. This can actually help to enhance your architecture in your home.

Picture windows are really actually pretty big, and the view that they provide can be quite impressive.  They don’t cost too much, in comparison to the benefits that they will bring to your home. If you think that picture windows would look nice in your home, then you have many options to consider.

The Advantages of Picture Windows

Coastal Picture WindowPicture windows come with their fair share of advantages.  First, they will give you a better view of the outdoors around your home. They do not alter your view at all, since the glass is not broken up.  When you want to give your home a better view, then the larger picture windows can be a great way to do this. It not only lets in more light, but it also helps to connect you with the nature in your surroundings.

Picture windows are also really good when it comes to making your home more weather resistant.  These windows create a great seal with your wall, and help to keep your home better insulated. Once they are installed, if they are installed properly, then they should have a good seam in which to keep the heat out during the summer months and the cool out during the winter months.  You don’t even have to do much maintenance when it comes to them.

Finally, picture windows are really rather affordable.  They do not cost nearly as much as other popular window options, such as casement windows and double hung windows.  They do not have functioning parts, such as hinges, so they are easier to make. They are also pretty simple, so while they are not too costly, they are really just elegant and nice.

The Drawbacks of Picture Windows

Picture windows do have their fair share of drawbacks as well.  As with anything, there are some things you will want to take into consideration.  These windows are not designed to ventilate. If you need added ventilation in your home, then a picture window may not be the first choice for you to consider.  They don’t open, so they can’t let any fresh air in. This can be a drawback, but only if you need the ventilation.

Picture windows are great when it comes to letting in the light, but with this allows the heat to come in with it.  Sunlight really does bring in natural solar heat. Sometimes this can make your cooling costs more expensive during the summer months.  You can fix this by using drapes during the hottest hours of the day.

You should also know that since picture windows are not able to open and close, they are not used as an emergency exit from your home.  This means if there is some sort of emergency or fire in your home, you will need to have another exit planned.

The Various Different Types of Picture Window Frames

Single Picture WindowPicture windows give you a lot of options when it comes to customization. You can choose from a variety of different frames, including vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum, and wooden.  They each come with their own benefits and advantages, so you just have to choose what is going to work best for you.

Vinyl Picture Window Frames

Vinyl frames are really the best option if you are looking for affordability.  They are going to be the least expensive frame option, but they are not really going to look the best or last as long.  The truth is, you get what you pay for. If you want to pay less for something that will still look pretty good, but may not last over time, then you might consider vinyl.

Fiberglass Picture Window Frames

Fiberglass frames are another option.  They have better durability than the vinyl frames, and they offer a good amount of insulation.  They are really also pretty affordable. They cost a bit more than the vinyl frames, but you get more out of them.  They should also last longer.

Aluminum Picture Window Frames

The aluminum frames are one of the more expensive options, but they are going to stand the test of time better than any of the other frames.  They are really strong, and pretty weather resistant. They are also available in different polishes, giving you more option when it comes to the visual aesthetics. If you have a bit more of a budget to work with, then consider going with aluminum frames.

Wooden Picture Window Frames

Wooden frames are another option that you might consider. They are usually more pricey, and while you would think they are the longer lasting option, they really aren’t.  They can be strong, but over time they can warp and wear with rain, weather and other moisture. They do look more traditional, and offer a good visual appeal. They just tend to be costly, and may not last as long as aluminum frames.

Pairing Your Picture Windows with Other Windows

Picture windows can also be paired together with other windows to give a larger window look in a room.  This is often used in the kitchen area, or dining area. You can pair the picture window with a casement window on either side.  This gives you the ability to have a great view from your home, but also gives you the option to let some fresh air in since casement windows can be opened and closed to provide ventilation.

They are also commonly used in the bay window style windows.  The picture window will usually be the center of the window, giving the ideal view.  It also makes the bay window look great. Choose the size that goes bets with your bay window area, and give yourself an unobstructed view.
