The ‘Bait & Switch’

Beware of ‘Bait and Switch’ contractors.

For those unfamiliar, a bait and switch is when a service provider offers a service at a given price and then raises that price once a homeowner shows interest or even after a contract is signed.

When it comes to contractors, companies bait and switch for two main reasons:

1) They are purposely attempting to deceive a homeowner. Contractors do this by offering a low price to generate interest from the homeowner with the goal of ‘thinning the herd’ of competing quotes. Once they have captured the homeowners interest, they raise the price once, twice, or even three times!

2) They are not adequately experience with the project type. Because of this, they underestimate the material cost, required labor, required project management & coordination, and/or the amount of time that the project will take to complete. Under this situation, it is not uncommon for a contractor to raise the price throughout the duration of the project. This results in a homeowner spending more money than they initially budgeted for their renovation.
