Transom Windows

Transom windows are commonly seen on many homes.  They add some accent to the architectural design of your home.  They not only offer great ventilation for your home, but they also bring in some added natural light and can make your home look great.  It can also add some value to your home.

Transom windows are typically hinged, and mounted at the top of your door frame.  They are usually placed horizontally, and have an arched shape to them. Some, however, may be rectangular shaped.  You can choose from various shapes, depending on the structure of your home. Generally, the transom window is the rectangular window that separates your door from the round window on top of it.  It can just be a way to add in just a little bit more light.

The Cost of Transom Windows

Transom windows may look like they are a bit on the pricey side, but they are actually a pretty affordable way to add some added flair to your home. Generally, these windows cost on average between $200 and

$600 per window.  This will depend a lot on the size of the window, and how much it costs for the installation.

Another factor that will play a part in the cost of the window is the style of the window.  For instance, a stained glass transom window is likely to cost much more than a plain transom window.  The same goes for windows that are decorated with ornate designs. These are typically going to be pricier, but add a bit more of an elegant touch to the look of your home.  This really is just a matter of personal preference, and of course your budget.

The Pros and Cons of Transom Windows

Transom windows have a lot of great benefits.  First, they can bring in a good amount of added natural light into your home.  If you don’t have many windows in a room, then this may be a great way to add some light to the room.  It helps by increasing light in dark foyers, without having to turn lights on all the time. They also help with the architectural design of your home.  They come in a variety of shapes and designs to give your home a unique touch. It really does give some added accent around your door.

Transom windows can also give you some extra wiggle room when it comes to decorating your home.  You can even have stained glass transom windows installed, or glass that has been intricately designed.  The sky is the limit when it comes to your options, so you can really customize your windows and make them your own.

If you are looking for transom windows to offer ventilation, then you will have to look for specific types of windows.  Many of them will not have any opening or closing functions, meaning they do not offer ventilation. If you choose an awning style transom window, however, it can open and close a bit to allow some air flow.  This is an added benefit.

When it comes to the drawbacks, it is important to know that transom windows can be somewhat hard to keep clean.  They are usually up high, above the doorways. This may make them hard to reach. You will definitely need a ladder handy to keep them clean on both the inside and outside.  Pressure washing the outside may be suffice though, but the interior may be a bit harder to clean. This is just one drawback to keep in mind.

Ways Transom Windows Can Add Natural Light to Your Home

Actual Transom WindowsSince one of the main reasons that people opt for transom windows is for the added light, let’s take a look at the ways it can bring in some extra light.  First, you can position transom windows above doorways that do not have windows surrounding them. This can help to bring in light to your dark entry room.  This is really good when you come home late at night when there is not much light inside.

Transom windows can also help to transfer light from one room in your house to another.  Transom windows can allow light to pass through from one room into another, offering added light and brightening up more than one area at once.  This really just depends on the structural design of your home though. Talk to a professional window installer about whether or not this would work in your home, and where the best placement would be for your windows to offer optimal light flow.

As the sun starts to set, you may not notice as much light coming into your home.  If you have transom windows, then you may notice that light comes into your home for longer.  This is because it gives the light more room to freely flow, even as the sun starts to get lower in the sky.  Most windows really only allow for direct sunlight to come through.

Considering the Architectural Concept

The architecture of your home is something that makes your home unique from the rest.  Adding transom windows for accents can not only give a unique taste, but it can also help to make it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.  This can also increase the resale value of your home. A Closer Look at Transom Window Ventilation

Since we already touched on ventilation, let’s delve a little deeper so that you can get a better understanding.  Transom windows are more often than not only used for design, but sometimes people like to get them installed to be able to allow some ventilation.  Ventilation helps to keep your home cooler in the summer by letting out some of the heat that builds up from the summer air. It also helps to keep out the humidity and moisture in the air.

When you have transom windows installed for ventilation purposes, you will want to get the awning style windows.  These actually swing open to allow some air flow. This can let small amounts of air pass through, so that it won’t be too much.  Opening large windows may offer too much ventilation, especially on a hot summer day.

High transom windows are typically opened on the side of the house that the sun is facing.  This lets hot hair be released from the house. Lower transom windows are usually put on the side of the house that sees the most shade.  This helps to let the cooler air in. They each serve their own purpose to help keep your home well ventilated.

Transom windows also offer secure ventilation.  If you spend a lot of time away from the home, but still want to be able to have some ventilation, then this may be a great option.  They are usually really small windows, and they are so high up, so it makes it virtually impossible for someone to get into your home through the opened window.

Venting your transom windows may be difficult though, especially if they are really high up.  You may find them difficult to reach. It may be a good idea to have a step ladder handy to be able to open and close the window as needed.  During harsh weather, you may accidentally leave it open and allow rain and other elements to get into your home. Just remember to keep an eye on whether it is open or closed, so that you can keep the cool air in and the warm air out when needed.

Transom Window Replacement

Regular windows can already be pretty pricey to replace, but transom windows can cost even more if they are broken.  Replacing a different shaped window, or a window higher up in your home, can often be pricey. Just know that while they are not as easily broken since they are higher up, replacing them can be costly.  It generally costs about the same to replace one as it costs to have one installed to begin with.

Professional Installation of Transom Windows

Transom windows really need to be professionally installed.  A professional window installation contractor can come out and take the measurements of the area and determine the specific window size.  You can then choose from a variety of different styles and designs that will work well with the architecture of your home. They will then cut the area for the window, and install it with an airtight seal to ensure that moisture and other weather elements will not come through.

Trying to install a transom window on your own can be pretty tricky, and if you do anything incorrectly it can lead to leaks.  This can lead to you having to replace the molding around your windows and doors, and can also lead to rotting wood. It is really just something that you want to try to avoid, so consider hiring a professional from the start.
