Which Windows Should I Choose For My Garage?

Renovating a garage can be a challenge any way you slice it. While the space still needs to be functional for storage and parking cars, modern homeowners also often want their garages to serve multiple purposes. Some, for instance, want to do woodworking or other hobbies while others are interested in creating dens or rec rooms in their garage spaces.

If you’re in the middle of a garage remodeling project – or if you’re just thinking about it – there are all sorts of decisions you’ll find yourself making before the job is complete. One thing you’ll need to consider is window selection. The types of windows that are installed in a room play a surprisingly big role in its overall appearance and functionality, so it’s important to know what styles tend to work best in a garage before you make a purchase. That’s where this guide comes in.

The Best Window Styles For Garages

Casement windows – Casement windows are generally on the larger side and are great for garages that need lots of cross-ventilation. These windows swing outward and sideways when they are open, meaning they are an excellent choice for small spaces where there isn’t room for a window to open on the interior side.

Awning windows – Awning windows, as their name suggests, resemble an awning when they are open. Similar to casement windows, this style opens outward – but, instead of swinging sideways with hinges, they open up, creating the “awning” aesthetic. Again, like casement windows, awning windows are great for tight spaces where windows can’t viably open inward.

Picture windows – Picture windows are aesthetically pleasing and are ideal for Carolina homeowners who chose their residential properties for the natural beauty of the Southeast. However, it is important to note that these windows are fixed in place and do not open. This means they are not a good choice for spaces that need ventilation, such as those where woodworking and painting may be taking place.

Double-hung windows – Double-hung windows are among the most popular choice for residential projects in general, not just garage renovations. These affordable windows fit perfectly with just about every home style, making them a versatile choice. Furthermore, this design saves space because the windows open by raising the center sash rather than swinging the pane in either direction.

Remember, you don’t have to choose just one type of window for your remodeled garage. Depending on the size of your space, it is completely possible to use several different window options to define various areas of the structure. Maybe, for instance, you want one type of window – such as a picture window – in your recreational space, while you would prefer a more functional option, like a double-hung window, in your workshop.
